My Teen Needs To Get Their License- What Do I Need To Do Next?

Step 1: Register Them For Our NCDMV Drivers Education Class!

A teen must complete a Driver’s Education Course (30+ hours of classroom instruction + 6 hours behind-the-wheel training). We recommend that you book your NCDMV LLP Level 1 Appointment at this time. You can try a walk in but it's a toss-up! (Must be 14.5 years old or older to participate.)

Step 2: Obtain Limited Learner’s Permit (Level 1)

A teen will hold this for nine months. They must obtain a Drivers Eligibility certificate from their high school at this point- For this requirement, they must be passing 70% of their classes. Following obtaining this, they must log 60 hours of driving time with a supervised driver. (Must be 15 years or older to participate.)

Step 3: Limited Provisional License (Level 2)

A teen must have held a Limited Learner’s Permit for at least nine months. They must have no convictions for moving violations or seat belt/mobile device infractions in the last 6 months. They must pass the Road Skills Test at the NCDMV. They are allowed to participate in unsupervised driving from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. and to/from work or any volunteer fire, rescue or emergency medical service. After 9 p.m. until 5 a.m., a supervising driver is required. (Must be 16 or older to participate.)

Step 4: Full Provisional License

Unsupervised driving at any time. They must be 16 to 17 years old. Have maintained a limited provisional license for at least six months. They must have no convictions of motor vehicle moving violations or seat belt/mobile telephone infractions within the last six months They must have completed and logged at least 12 hours of driving. Use of mobile devices prohibited. - At age 18, upgrading a full provisional license to a Class C driver license can be done online.

Classroom Instruction Questions

🔹 Q: How long is the classroom portion of the program?
âś… 30-hours of classroom instruction is required by North Carolina law. This is typically completed over a set schedule. We offer 36 hours.

🔹 Q: What happens if my teen misses a class?
✅ State regulations require students to complete 30 hours. If a student misses a class, they must make up the time in a future session.

🔹 Q: What does the classroom portion cover?
âś… Topics include:

  • NC traffic laws and road signs.
  • Defensive driving techniques.
  • Safe driving strategies and hazard recognition.
  • The dangers of distracted/impaired driving.
  • NCDMV written test preparation.

âś… Driving sessions are scheduled after successful completion of classroom instruction. Older students and those with permit appointments may receive priority due to permit requirements.

âś… Each session lasts 2 hours, with a total of 6 hours of driving instruction.

🔹 Q: What skills will my teen learn during behind-the-wheel training?

  • Basic vehicle operation and control.

  • Highway and high-speed road navigation.
